Notes from the Director
While the goal of many choruses is to prepare for the concert, Lyric League is a bit different. This is the way I might define our goals.
1. To Sing for the Joy of it.
2. To build a community of friends who encourage and support one another.
3. To learn music that is interesting, challenging, enjoyable, and entertaining.
4. To improve the ability to read music.
4. To improve vocal tone, breathing, enunciation, expression, balance, and blend.
5. To prepare us as performers and entertainers.
6. To show what we have accomplished through our concerts, shows, and appearances.
Although it may be at the end of the list, performance is the point of the arrow that keeps us focused on progressing. Like that elusive letter "A" in school, performance offers applause and thanks for a job well done!
Lyric League is my hobby and my joy. When I retired as director of the Athens Choral Society in the fall of 2004, I was unwilling to part with my wonderful cadre of friends and fellow singers. A number of these had also sung under my direction in other venues, such as voice classes, church choirs, etc. We decided to form a vocal ensemble, and made our first appearance as Lyric League in February of 2005. Since the fall of 2007, we have added thirteen new singers to the group. Nelson ‘Hitch’ Hitchcock, my husband of 45 years, has been actively involved in every rehearsal and performance. He manages the website, makes rehearsal CDs, sings baritone or tenor as needed, and lovingly encourages me to utilize my creative gifts of composing and arranging. Our choice of repertory has been folk, jazz, popular tunes, and Broadway hits. I also wrote a musical for the League, which we presented last summer. We have a number of soloists within the group. My philosophy is that solo singing builds confidence and encourages voice training. It is evident to audiences at our concerts that we sing for the joy of it. Yes, kudos to you. I'm glad that all your hard work is paying off!
You've definitely "earned" your talented peeps. What Lyric League
offers is so special! Stacy (Smith)
A former co-worker/friend of mine and her friend raved about the show. Jane is thinking about joining us. She knew several people who attended the show and they also loved it! (Mary Mattocks)
We received this letter from a long-time friend in Winder, concerning Lyric League’s benefit for Relay for Life at First United Methodist Church.
Dear Dell,
Thanks for the Lyric League’s presentation to raise money to combat cancer. I was pleased with the attendance and the contributions of $806.00 which will be added to the other money raised.
I sincerely thank you and “Hitch” and all of the singers for sharing your talents with us for this great need. The programs were so nice and great to have as we had a Sentimental Journey through the 40s.
Please know that you are greatly appreciated! Also thank everyone who had a part in this for me!
Love,
Charlie Jo (Watson)
