THOUGHTS

THOUGHTS FROM THE DIRECTOR

Tall, skinny Betty Jane Slater had long dark hair and wore swinging skirts and dangling bracelets. She was not only the glee club director at Waycross High, but she also taught at several elementary schools. Back in the day, there were no DVDs, IPODs and the like. She dragged a projector, 78 platters, a record player, and Lord knows what else from school to school. I joined the glee club as a 7th grader. Miss Slater asked if anyone could play the piano and I raised my hand. I sight read an accompaniment, and she said, "I didn't know you could really play the piano." From that day, glee club was my haven.
I moved on to the 200 voice Stetson Glee Club and became assistant director my senior year. After Stetson, I directed the Waycross High School Glee Club. Here is a picture of the group and a recording we didn't even know existed until recently. (Scroll down for more.)
My wonderful husband of 49 years was also a veteran of Glee Clubs. Hitch was a member of the University of Georgia Men's Glee Club, which sang on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1957. We raised three musicians.
